Entire Career of Salary Inadequate for UK Workers to Become Part of Wealthiest 10%, Study Reveals

Per recent research, the median employee in the UK would have to work half a century of salary to achieve the net worth of the richest 10% nationwide.

Expanding Financial Divide Over Time

The study analyzed financial assets statistics including the 2020-22 timeframe and discovered that back in the mid-2000s, it would have required nearly four decades of typical employment income to enter the top 10th of the financial hierarchy.

An economic expert part of the study stated: "Financial divides in Britain are presently so substantial that a typical full-time employee saving all their earnings throughout their career would still not be able to attain the highest level of the economic scale."

Quantifying the Economic Gap

The analysis discovered that the disparity between the wealth of the median citizen and an individual in the top 10% was £1 million in 2006-08, but had expanded to £1.3 million in inflation-adjusted terms by 2020-22.

The researcher continued: "These differences are particularly worrying as wealth mobility in Britain is restricted – people that start life affluent tend to stay wealthy, and vice versa."

Comparative Financial Divide

Despite the economic divide growing in specific figures, the share of complete net worth in the UK held by the wealthiest families – termed "proportional economic disparity" – has been "mostly consistent since the eighties," according to the research.

Over this timeframe, total wealth in the UK rose substantially from thrice the annual GDP, to nearly seven and a half times.

Contributors of Wealth Inequality

So-called "passive" appreciation, through increasing property values and changes in pension valuations, were the key contributors of the growing financial disparity from 2010 onward, as stated in the study.

These appreciations generally flowed to senior citizens with real estate, the research shows – intensifying the intergenerational wealth divide.

Intergenerational Economic Gaps

The typical financial disparity between people in their early 30s and those in their early 60s grew by more than 100% in actual value, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to 310 thousand pounds.

Area-Based Variations

There were also pronounced regional variations, with the median value of net worth in 2020-22 standing at £290,000 in south-east England, where property prices have tended to rise rapidly, compared with 110 thousand pounds in the northeastern region.

Health Crisis Years Consequences

During the pandemic, when numerous employees were covered under the public-funded employment protection, and health crisis restrictions limited opportunities for spending, the data shows numerous families were able to save, enhancing their financial standing.

Wealthier families achieved superior outcomes, nevertheless. "The average household in the poorest fifth saw their available funds grow by only eighty pounds over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), broadly the same as the 24 months before COVID. In contrast, the median home in the highest income quintile saw their liquid savings rise by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
