Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
